How to Get Back on Track

As a child, I reveled in the back-to-school season. It was quite possibly my favorite time of the year. A time of new beginnings, if you will. New class, new teacher, shopping for new clothes (my fav!) and school supplies (my 2nd fav!). It was the opportunity to start the year off right with endless possibilities. Fast forward a few years (ahem, several years!) later, I’m treating back-to-school season as a chance to hit the reset button and focus on my goals for the next twelve months. Here are 3 ways I’m leveraging the back-to-school inspiration to get back on track!

  1. Create a mantra (or 3) to live by | I find it helpful to have a theme, mantra, or quote to live by…a reminder to center yourself on what’s important when your mind gets cluttered with gubbly-goo. For me, I created 3 key themes from which I set goals (next section) to be my North Star for the next 12 months. I want to a) Live my life with purpose b) Do things that make me happy c) Get financially organized. When I focus on these 3, it will be a banger of a year!!! What is your mantra?
  2. Setting Goals | I used to be a superstar at setting goals AND following through, but somehow in the last few years, I’ve focused more on an endless to-do list with limited focus. With a little help from the book, Get Your Sh*t Together by Sarah Knight, I am using her technique of setting a goal, strategy, focus, then commit. I know it seems ridiculously simple, but sometimes you have to be hit over the head a billion times before it becomes clear…am I right?? This book has been life-changing for me by helping me think through what’s important in my life and why, writing the goal into bite-size pieces and finally committing to each step by scheduling it (next section).
  3. Time Blocking | This time management system is being talked about everywhere…trust me, just Google it. It’s such a simple and effective way of getting things done. Simply pick a task and schedule it, now here’s the tricky part…you can’t do anything else but focus on a single task (that’s the productivity part!). Simple, but hard to do. I’ve been using my new Ink+Volt planner to get me motivated and focused on goal setting and time blocking.

With these 3 simple techniques, I am ready to take on next 12 months by storm! How do you stay on track? I’d love to hear what tips you have for goal-setting, staying productive, and getting things done!
